Is Barking Central a Good Place to Live?

Crime is on the higher side here compared to most of London. Violent crime and anti-social behaviour are the most common issues, and there is a visible drugs presence in parts of the area. It is not the kind of neighbourhood where most people feel on edge every day, but those who are particularly sensitive to street-level disorder, or families with young children, will want to factor this in carefully before committing.

Relative to London, it is one of the more accessible places to buy or rent. Flats make up much of the market, and terraced houses are available at prices that would be out of reach in most other parts of the city. It works well for first-time buyers looking to get on the ladder, or anyone coming from inner London who wants significantly more space for their money. Renters will also find it noticeably cheaper than areas further west.

It is a busy, unpretentious area with a very mixed population and a strong sense that people are getting on with everyday life. The town centre has a shopping mall, a library, a good spread of convenience stores and cafes, so daily errands are straightforward. The social scene is thin though: restaurant and bar options are limited, and for evenings out most residents head elsewhere. It works well as a practical base rather than a destination in itself.

There are genuine bright spots in the school options. Loxford School and Kensington Primary both hold Outstanding ratings from Ofsted, which is a real asset, and most other nearby schools are rated Good. Local parks provide some green space, though the area is not especially leafy. The main consideration for families is crime: the higher levels of violent crime and anti-social behaviour are worth thinking through carefully, and some families will prefer a quieter setting elsewhere in outer east London.
