Is City of London a Good Place to Live?

Score
6.2/10
Rank
130th out of 992

The City of London suits people who want unbeatable transport connections and don't mind living in what is essentially a global business district. During the week it buzzes with life and has excellent restaurants, cafes and amenities right on the doorstep. At weekends it can feel eerily quiet, and the air quality is genuinely poor. Very expensive and mostly limited to flats, so this is really for buyers with deep pockets who prioritise commuting convenience above all else.

Wheretomove Review

We reviewed City of London across 6 key dimensions to help you make an informed decision about where to live.

Safety

Average·853rd of 992
4.7/ 10

Crime is higher than average here, with theft from the person, general theft, and shoplifting accounting for most incidents rather than serious violence. The Square Mile's enormous daytime working population naturally inflates these figures compared to residential neighbourhoods. Bear this in mind if you are sensitive to busy, high-footfall environments, but it is less of a concern if you understand the commercial context.

Affordability

Average·681st of 992
4.2/ 10

This is one of the most expensive areas in London, with flats being the predominant option for buyers and even those commanding prices well above the London average. The limited residential stock and prime central location push prices to a level that rules out most buyers. Suits those purchasing as an investment or with a very substantial budget.

Education

Good·276th of 992
6.2/ 10

School provision is strong, with several Ofsted Outstanding primaries nearby including The Aldgate School and City of London Primary Academy, Islington, alongside Central Foundation Boys' School as a well-regarded Outstanding secondary option. The majority of remaining schools are rated Good. A solid area for families who put school quality high on their list.

Environment

Below Average·878th of 992
3.3/ 10

Air quality is poor, with elevated nitrogen dioxide levels reflecting the density of traffic and the built-up commercial environment. There are pockets of green space dotted around, but the area is overwhelmingly urban. Not a good fit for anyone who values clean air or easy access to quiet outdoor space.

Transport

Excellent·1st of 992
10.0/ 10

Quite simply the best-connected area in London. Bank, Liverpool Street, Farringdon, Moorgate, Cannon Street, and Blackfriars between them give access to the Central, Northern, Waterloo and City, Circle, District, Metropolitan, Hammersmith and City, and Elizabeth lines, plus the DLR and Thameslink. You can reach almost any part of London quickly. Ideal if commuting convenience or travel flexibility is a priority.

Amenities

Excellent·6th of 992
9.9/ 10

The City is exceptionally well served for restaurants, cafes, bars, and gyms, plus a good range of museums including several within easy walking distance. The caveat is that this is a business district: much of it quietens sharply at weekends and in the evenings. Great if you work here and want everything on your doorstep during the week, but less suited to those seeking a neighbourhood that stays lively seven days a week.

Old Street & St Luke's

6.3/10

Old Street suits young professionals and tech workers who want to live at the heart of London's creative scene. Transport links are genuinely exceptional, with multiple tube lines and rail services putting almost anywhere in the city within easy reach, and the bars, restaurants and cultural venues are second to none. It is on the expensive side and theft is a real concern. Quiet streets and clean air are simply not what this area offers.

Clerkenwell

6.4/10

Clerkenwell suits professionals who want to be at the centre of things without sacrificing neighbourhood character. The architecture, independent restaurants on Exmouth Market, and proximity to the Barbican give it a creative, grown-up energy that sets it apart from nearby City fringe areas. It is genuinely expensive and the streets are busy enough that crime is a real consideration, but the transport links are hard to beat anywhere in London.

Borough & Southwark Street

6.1/10

Borough and Southwark Street is one of central London's most exciting places to live, with Borough Market on the doorstep, exceptional transport connections, and a restaurant and bar scene that rivals anywhere in the city. The trade-offs are real though: it is expensive, air quality is poor, and the heavy tourist and commuter footfall means theft is more common than in quieter residential areas. It suits well-paid professionals who want urban intensity and convenience over calm.

Hoxton South & East

6.4/10

Hoxton South and East suits young professionals and creatives who want to be at the centre of things. The transport links are genuinely exceptional, the food and nightlife scene is one of London's best, and schools are surprisingly strong for families who do eventually settle here. The trade-offs are real though: it is expensive, the air quality is poor, and crime is higher than most parts of the city.

Spitalfields

6.0/10

Spitalfields suits young professionals who want to be at the centre of London life, with exceptional transport links and a neighbourhood that never runs out of things to do. The trade-offs are real: crime runs higher than the London average, air quality is poor, and you will pay a premium for the postcode. Families will find the schools genuinely strong, but the busy streets and nightlife skew this firmly towards those without young children.
